Lamarck's Explanation

  • born August 1, 1744
  • youngest of eleven children
  • He was a French scientist.
  • Lamarck had a collection of invertebrates.
  • He was the first to propose unifying hypothesis of species.
  • He hypothesised about an aquired trait
  • an aquired trait is one that is not determined by genes. instead, it arises during an organism's lifetime as a result of the organism's experience or behavior
  • Lamarck made a study of habits and physiology of shore birds.
  • His hypothesis was attacked by scientist who rejected the idea of evolution itself.
  • His ideas were later disapproved
  • Lamarck was the first to clearly state that types of organsisms change over time and that new types of organsisms are modified descendants of older types.
  • this idea was presented more convincingly more than 50 years later by Charles Darwin.
  • In the mid 1800's both Charles Darwin and Alfred Wallas independently proposed the hypothesis that species were modified by natural selection.
  • Natural Selection- Organisms best suited to their enviorment reproduce more successfully than other organisms.
  • Population-or interbreeding single species group.
